FirstSpear Helmet Hut – Woodland

binary comment

There’s nothing unusual about this particular item from FirstSpear aside from the non-standard camo pattern, it is a regular Helmet Hut in design/construction. If you want a really good padded transport and storage bag for your helmet along with night vision, mount, ear pro, lights and various other extra ancillaries and spares, then the Hut is simply an excellent choice.

If you really expect your Hut to get bounced around and you absolutely have to lock down the helmet inside, you can make use of this webbing strap that will run right over the top and ensure absolutely zero movement.

So why is this one in Woodland even though FirstSpear don’t offer it as a colourway? A combination of my own ignorance mixed with a very good friend of mine who works at the company being, frankly, far too generous.

For a number of years through the mid 10s I really wanted a modern plate carrier in US Woodland, and since the Strandhogg line has been amongst the very best of all armour vest solutions on the market since its’ inception I (incorrectly) thought that perhaps I could get a Strandhogg in the world’s most recognisable camo pattern. I knew that to make their 6/12 laminate FS has to source un-coated nylon fabric, so I spent a good while tracking some down in Woodland. I think I bought around 3 yards of 330D in the end.

At the time I had some small amount of knowledge about the business of tactical gear manufacture, but a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. What I foolishly failed to realise was that to get nylon bonded to the loop fabric that creates the 6/12 laminate requires a roll of hundreds of yards to be worked on in one go. It is often the case that such high cost and specialised procedures within the in world of gear fabrics run like this in order that they are financially viable given the setup costs involved. Since my tiny roll of fabric couldn’t be laminated in to a material useful for an FS vest, my buddy there very kindly offered to use it for a smaller product that doesn’t require a laminate but rather a standard single layer cordura. Since the Helmet Hut is such a product and I was already interested in purchasing another one at the time, the choice was fairly easy.

I do wish the FirstSpear 6/12 chest rigs, belts and carriers were easier to create in a wider variety of camo patterns as all of their gear is absolutely top notch, but alas only large contracted runs are enough to make the production viable for any given pattern or colour. At the end of the day the Helmet Hut isn’t a big hype type product that will really get people hot under the colour when seeing a rare variant. However I do very much enjoy owning this one none the less, especially since it is just as useful and practical as any standard commercial colourway iteration of the same item (which is very useful indeed).
