I think that people larp as whomever, or whatever, they really wish they were (instead of who or what they currently are).
There’s a million airsoft DEVGRU Mk18s and Delta SOPMODs out there, but what influences my preferences is my feed on IG, which is all my yankeedoodle buddy’s Do-it-all/end of the world/government zombies/GPR builds.
I notice these tend to be simple common or garden 16″ setups, from what I’ve read that’s often because that length keeps you shorter an M16 when you add a can, but still has plenty of energy at the pointy end. While US tax stamps have of course changed now, they used to be a not-insignificant cost and a very long wait, and afaik you can’t transport an SBR across state lines without doing paperwork, which makes travelling to classes or comps with your main squeeze, far more laborious.
There are comparatively extremely few replicas of common civilian ARs available, and even the ones that are close tend not to be quite right. 14.5″ barrels are very much the standard, with 16″ being real unicorns in terms of commercial offerings, for example. Even finding an after-market 16″ outer barrel on its’ own took a little bit of searching, especially finding the vaguely correct profile.
Fortunately I found various replica small parts (receiver pins, mag catch, trigger guard etc) that would be correct for a Super Duty MOD1 already available. Those would have been more difficult, and frankly less interesting, to have tried to get custom made.
I have 99% of the external parts together now though, so I can finally start actually putting some of them together. The only problem is once I do, I then won’t have a main project to be working on…
