I had wondered about this for a very long time and today was obviously the day to actually try it out.
It was a surprisingly enlightening little test in the end:
-I never twigged that Bruce/John are in fact lefty. I thought maybe the image was just mirrored, but once I watched the actual grab and tried it out I realised the truth. Looked in to it, turns out that there were various mods made to the guns Bruce used on set to facilitate him being left handed – such as extended slide release levers.
-John only has an empty MP5 and 2 rounds left in his Beretta (which he is shown to check and the portrayal is pretty spot-on) and he manages
to perfectly land both shots when the time comes. While the range is short, I’m torn as to whether the marksmanship or the ‘draw’ is the more impressive feat.
-Clearly parcel tape was made of different stuff back then, because the tape he stumbles upon manages to hold a service sized, double stack, metal-framed pistol to soaking wet, sweaty and bloody skin as he walks and moves his arms. The film skips over the actual sticking-on-to-his-own-back part, conveniently.

Overall while outlandish and unlikely, the whole scene isn’t totally beyond the realms of possibility and the location he tapes the pistol does actually make sense. Well done to everyone involved in one of the best scenes in an action film there has ever been!
