What If: L85A3 Carbine Body

Fun project accessory for my ICS AEG. The self-imposed limitation here was to use only parts and accessories that have been issued, trialled or at least prototyped within the MoD/RSAF/HK. This particular barrel length (or close to it) is one that only existed for the briefest time in the A1 era, and only on one or two prototypes that were made in an attempt to sell SA80 to a foreign nation in the far east.

Originally the basis of this idea came to me after watching my favourite guntubers Hop and Brassfacts struggle to setup the bullpups that are available on the US market for modern night time usage, mainly because their handguards and top rails were a lot worse than a nice, modern AR. I was working in an armoury with lots of L85A3s at the time and I thought “these things wouldn’t have the issues they’re running in to” (lefty issues aside). Problem is of course there weren’t currently any semi auto L85s being sold in the US.

I’m very excited to see all the online content that will spring up around the Murdoch & Co A2s in the US and perhaps even more so interested to see what happens as and when he gets to producing the A3 later down the line. That will properly facilitate modern accessories being used on the platform as well as potential modifications by customers in ways that have never been done before on the SA80 family (if anyone buys one who is rich enough to start chopping and changing an expensive, niche reproduction gun).

Personally I’ve been working away for years to create a post here on the site which compiles all the most unusual and interesting variants and modifications of SA80 and related items. I’ve managed to dig up some very cool stuff which I’m confident most of you won’t have ever seen, so do stay tuned for that one.
