A Bad Purchase – Rail Tacos (Not HSGI)

I’ve checked through everything that I’ve bought in the past 6-7 years, and I can’t find one other thing that turned out to be nearly as bad as these handguard wraps. I’m picky with what I acquire, spend a long while weighing up basically every decision and after a number of years of having these same hobbies I can say I’ve got a pretty good eye at this point.

These covers however, were quite quickly discarded. Whatever the supposedly heat resistant material was on the inside was only fit for the bin. Whatever this stuff touched, it left a generous layer of flakey little bits of rubber-like mess all over. Not over time either, immediately on contact. To add insult to injury, this mess was very tenacious and difficult to remove.

Not just that, but the thin cord used for attachment was too short leaving just barely enough tail to actually tie the cover in place. Heaven forbid you loosened it as well, because the button holes were so narrow and constricted that retreating the cord through them was a major pain in the butt.

They were at least not too expensive and came in lots of the best camo patterns. Also fortunately, they didn’t last long in the market, and the individual making them has long stopped the endeavour.

From what I’ve seen, the trend for wraps like these was a fairly brief one in the tail end of the 10s. Some companies still offer similar products but they’re not the zeitgeist. Which to be honest is kind of a shame because the lack of consistent geometry with M-LOK handguards seems to have caused a real wasteland in terms of good covers for the system; certainly by comparison to pic rail.
